COVID-19 and the Tax Burden

The cost of the coronavirus virus will unavoidably result in a bigger tax burden, Don Draper of Tax and the Family says, and it is all the more important therefore that the tax burden should be shared fairly. It is surely unacceptable that households with children are bearing a bigger share and that families in poverty can be paying four figure tax bills. A CARE report, released shortly before the lockdown, showed that a in 2018 a family earning £39,000 could be paying 28% more than the OECD average whereas a taxpayer without family responsibilities could be paying 8% less. In some of these countries these families would not be paying any income tax at all.
